Acetohydroxamic Acid: Uses, Side Effects, and Drug Interactions
Brand names: Lithostat
# Overview of Acetohydroxamic Acid Acetohydroxamic acid (often called AHA) is a medicine used to treat certain urinary tract infections that are caused by bacteria. This drug works by stopping bacteria from breaking down urea, a waste product in urine. By doing this, it makes it harder for bacteria to survive in the urinary tract and helps prevent serious kidney infections. Doctors prescribe this medicine when other antibiotics alone haven't worked well enough to clear up stubborn infections. If you take this medicine, you need to know some important safety information. Don't drink alcohol while taking AHA because it can cause a rash on your skin. Be careful if you're taking iron supplements or other medicines—AHA can grab onto iron and prevent your body from absorbing it properly, so you may need to take your iron at different times. The medicine hasn't been tested much in pregnant women or nursing mothers, so talk to your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Like all medicines, AHA can cause side effects in some people, so let your doctor know right away if you notice anything unusual while taking it. Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes.
