# Amphetamine: What You Need to Know Amphetamine is a prescription medicine used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, a sleep disorder where people fall asleep unexpectedly during the day. The medication works by increasing activity in the brain, helping people with ADHD focus better and stay alert. For people with narcolepsy, it helps them stay awake. A doctor will decide if amphetamine is right for you based on your specific condition. This medicine comes with important safety warnings. Amphetamine can be habit-forming, so you should only take it exactly as your doctor prescribes. Tell your doctor about any other medications you take, especially antidepressants, because mixing amphetamine with certain drugs can be dangerous and cause serious health problems. You should also let your doctor know if you have heart problems, high blood pressure, or mental health issues, as amphetamine may not be safe for you. Common side effects include trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, and increased heart rate. Never share your medication with others, and contact your doctor immediately if you experience chest pain, severe headaches, or unusual changes in mood or behavior.
