# Consumer-Friendly Overview of Liraglutide Liraglutide is a prescription medicine that helps people manage type 2 diabetes and can also help with weight loss. It works by helping your body control blood sugar levels and can make you feel fuller, which may help you eat less. The medicine is given as an injection that you use at home, usually once a week. Doctors prescribe it when diet and exercise alone aren't enough to control blood sugar or weight. It's important to know some safety tips before using liraglutide. This medicine can slow down how quickly food moves through your stomach, which might affect how well other medicines work in your body—so tell your doctor about all medications you take. Some people may experience side effects like nausea or stomach problems, especially when starting the medicine. You should not use liraglutide if you have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or a condition called medullary thyroid cancer. Always talk with your doctor about whether this medicine is right for you and follow the instructions carefully.
