ramipril

Brand names: Ramipril

# Overview of Ramipril Ramipril is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and help protect your heart. When you have high blood pressure, your heart has to work harder to pump blood through your body. Ramipril works by relaxing your blood vessels, which makes it easier for blood to flow and lowers your blood pressure. Doctors often prescribe it to people who have had a heart attack or who have heart problems, because it can help protect your heart from damage and make it work more efficiently. Like all medicines, ramipril can cause side effects and may not be safe for everyone. You should not take ramipril if you're allergic to it or if you're pregnant, because it can harm an unborn baby. Be careful when taking ramipril with certain other drugs, especially water pills (diuretics), because together they can make your blood pressure drop too low. Also tell your doctor if you take lithium or pain relievers like ibuprofen, as these can interact with ramipril. Always take this medication exactly as your doctor prescribes and let them know about all other medications you're taking to stay safe.

Known Interactions

7. DRUG INTERACTIONS • Diuretics: Possibility of excessive hypotension ( 7.1 ). • Lithium: Use with caution ( 7.3 ). • Gold: Nitritoid reactions have been reported ( 7.4 ). • NSAIDS use may lead to increased risk of renal impairment and loss of antihypertensive effect ( 7.5 ). 7.1 Diuretics Patients on diuretics, especially those in whom diuretic therapy was recently instituted, may occasionally experience an excessive reduction of blood pressure after initiation of therapy with ramipril. The possibility of hypotensive effects with ramipril can be minimized by either decreasing or discontinuing the diuretic or increasing the salt intake prior to initiation of treatment with ramipril. If this is not possible, reduce the starting dose [see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION ( 2 ) ]. Ramipril can attenuate potassium loss caused by thiazide diuretics. Potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone, amiloride, triamterene, and others) or potassium supplements can increase the risk of hyperkalemia. Ther
