sumatriptan

Brand names: Sumatriptan

# Sumatriptan Overview Sumatriptan is a medicine used to treat migraine headaches when they start happening. It works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing natural chemicals in the body that cause headaches, throbbing pain, sensitivity to light, nausea, and other migraine symptoms. This medicine helps relieve migraine pain so you can feel better and get back to your normal activities. It comes in different forms, including injections, tablets, and nasal sprays. Before taking sumatriptan, it's important to know some safety rules. Don't use this medicine if you're taking certain other drugs, especially medications for depression called MAO inhibitors or ergot-based migraine medicines—mixing these can be dangerous. Tell your doctor about all medicines you're taking and any heart problems you have, since sumatriptan affects blood vessels. Common side effects include pain or redness where you inject the medicine, tingling feelings, dizziness, and warm sensations. Never take sumatriptan more than the dose your doctor recommends, and wait at least 24 hours between doses. If your migraines keep getting worse or you have chest pain, call your doctor right away.
